The main difference being they were not allowed to serve on aircraft or on board a ship headed for combat duty, and for all practical purposes were restricted to duty in the 48 states. Black women were not allowed in the WAVES until 1944, and in 1948 the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act allowed women to permanently serve in the Navy. Truly, all these brave women do an exception job serving their country, but not in any of these costumes.
